Q-tip tracing is a fun and easy way to develop the fine motor skills that’s necessary for writing.
A large part of learning how to write and form letters and numbers is gaining control over your arm, hand and finger movements. Tracing can help kids practise those fundamental skills for writing.
All you need is:
Paper
Permanent Markers
Paint
Q-tips
Containers for paints
Instructions
On a piece of paper write out the letters of the alphabet using permanent markers. I use colours that match the paint as a way to build on the activity.
Then set up the area with your paints and paper. Introduce the activity to your child and explain to them they need to trace the letters using the paint and q-tips.
How to extend learning?
Match the colour of the paint to the letter
Colour recognition
Trace lowercase letters
Phonological awareness: sounding out the letters
Identifying a pattern
Match an object to each letter
