What shapes are in your house?
There are shapes everywhere, send your little ones on a shape hunt using some easy shape windows!
All you need to make these shape windows are
Card stock or construction paper
Scissors
Marker
Contact paper or laminating paper ( optional)
Instructions
In the resource section of the website there are shape templates that you can use or you can draw your own shapes.
Cut out the centre of each shape to create a ‘glass’ to look through. You can laminate the shapes which will help them last longer and also creates a great glass effect for the shape windows.
How to implement the activity?
While looking at the shape windows talk to your child about the different shapes they notice.
Count how many sides and corners each shape has.You can then discuss which shapes are similar? Which are different?
Now it’s time to go on a shape hunt!
Get your child to head out on a shape hunt. Get them to walk around the house like a detective on the hunt for a circle, or a triangle, or a square.
Look for shapes around your kitchen, bedroom or in your backyard. To extend your child’s learning you can ask them to find an item to match the shape they are hunting for and bring it back to share and talk about.
You can also build on their memory by asking them to remember the things they saw and then write a list of all the items they found.
This activity teaches children about
Identifying names of shapes
Counting- counting sides and corners of shapes
Compare and contrast : comparing objects by size and length
Independent play
Concentration
